As Canada become the latest country to ban incoming flights from the UK, with a 72-hour ban on British planes entering its airspace, Manchester Airport has issued a warning to travellers. The flight bands are as a result of news about a new mutant strain of coronavirus that is spreading rapidly throughout the United Kingdom.
Passengers are being advised by Manchester Airport to check with their airlines before travelling to the airport. Bosses tweeted: “While Manchester Airport is open, many flights will be subject to short notice change or cancellation. If you are due to fly to a country that has restrictions in place, please make checks with your airline before you travel to Manchester airport.”
So far France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Belgium, Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Canada have all halted flights arriving from the UK. The Czech Republic has made quarantine measures stricter for people arriving from Britain and Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Morocco have announced they will suspend all air travel from the UK.
A Manchester Airport spokesman said: “Due to recent developments with the pandemic, a number of countries around the world have imposed restrictions on inbound flights arriving from the UK. We appreciate this is a very difficult time for our passengers and we are working closely with all airlines to minimise any disruption. This is a fast moving situation, with many flights subject to short notice change or cancellation. We urge all passengers due to leave the UK to check the status of their flight and not to travel to the airport unless they are certain it is going to go ahead.”
